Douglas J Thomson Tree Surgery // Our services

At Douglas J Thomson Tree Surgery, we take great pride in our work. All our staff hold National Proficiency Test Council (NPTC) and LANTRA qualifications, and all work is carried out to British Standard BS3998:2010. We are fully qualified and insured.

Some of the services we offer include:

TREE REMOVAL

There are various reasons why a tree may need to be removed; it may be dead or diseased, it may pose a hazard or have substantially decayed, it may be in an unsuitable location (blocking construction or even light). Whichever it is, we are fully qualified and insured to carry out such work.

SECTIONAL FELLING

A section fell involves removing the branches one at a time and lowering them to the ground before removing the trunk (also in sections if necessary). This is a useful method of removing trees in tight and confined spaces.

TREE PRUNING

Tree pruning involves selectively removing branches to encourage a healthy balanced tree.

CROWN LIFTING

This involves raising the canopy by the removal of the lowest branches either to achieve a uniform height for aesthetics, or for access, which for a pedestrian on a public footpath is 2.5m/8ft or for vehicles on a public highway is 5.2m/17ft.

CROWN THINNING

Crown thinning is the even removal of small branches throughout the canopy which increases light through the tree whilst maintaining the original shape and size of the tree.

CROWN REDUCTION

A reduction of the crown involves reducing the canopy of the tree by a specific amount, ie 30%. In reducing a tree, the end result should be a symmetrically balanced canopy. Reduction allows for more light from over the top, around the sides and through the tree in the form of dappled light. It also reduces the threat of windsail, which can be of concern with tall or large trees and re-invigorates the tree, encouraging it to send out new shoots which can be especially important if there is die back within the crown.

DEAD-WOODING

Dead-wooding is simply the removal of any dead, dying or diseased branches throughout the tree. This is especially important if the tree is growing in a public domain as these branches are naturally weak and carry a danger of breaking and potentially endangering lives and property.

SITE CLEARANCE

In the case of new developments, pipeline laying, new roads or any other building works, sites will often need to be completely cleared of trees, scrub areas and roots. We have all the tools and skills necessary to carry out such work and leave the site clear for work.

HEDGE MAINTENANCE

We deal with all aspects of hedge maintenance from trimming them to keeping them neat and tidy, re-forming overgrown hedges or even completely removing them.

WOODLAND MANAGEMENT

We work with woodland owners, estate managers and conservation groups to carry out the required activities, for example thinning and planting.
